Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

You deserve your nuggets today.  Last week the BBR Staff and it’s degenerate gambler and mascot Abby were on assignment in the greater south Louisiana area.  They covered LSU and the New Orleans Saints live.   They also covered bets.  But most of all, they watched more than wrote.  It’s now  time to write more on Al Gore’s internet with pearls of wisdom in the form of Ten Piece Nuggets below.  Crunch away.

  1.  The new AP College Top 25 is out.  We know, we know, the playoff rankings are more important.  But, you cannot wait till Wednesday AM for nuggets, you need them now.  It feels like the top 3 have separated themselves a bit.  LSU, THE Ohio State U, and Clemson are undefeated, ranked 1,2, and 3 and headed to their respective conference championship games as moderate to big favorites.  LSU hammered Texas A&M and dumbfounded Jimbo Fisher.  THE rolled over Michigan and dumbfounded Jim Harbaugh.  Clemson worked South Carolina and dumbfounded Will Muschamp.
  2. THE is #1 in the playoff ranks and did nothing to lose any ground.  The chase for the fourth spot is currently where the action is.  Georgia currently holds the #4 spot.  But, but, but.  Nipping on the heels of the Bulldogs are one loss Utah, one loss Oklahoma, and one loss Baylor.
  3. One loss #5 Utah meets two loss and #13 ranked Oregon in the PAC 12 championship this weekend.  Is a win and a Ga. loss enough to get them to the final four?  Sure.   But what if they do so, Ga. losses, and one loss #6 Oklahoma dispatches #8 Baylor?  What if Baylor dispatches Oklahoma?
  4. And, what if Ga beats LSU?  Does LSU hold onto the fourth spot as the best one loss team?  BBR thinks the following.  If Ga wins they are in.  IF Ga. loses they are out.  If Ga losses, a Utes win gets them in.  A Ga loss and a Ute loss opens the door wide for the Big 12 winner (Baylor/Okla) to charge through.
  5. Of course a THE loss or a Clemson loss creates additional chaos.  The early Vegas look at that possibility is out.  Vegas seems to think that isn’t possible.  THE is favored by a bullish 17 over # 10 Wisconsin in the BIG 10 Championship Game.  Clemson is favored by a whopping 28 over Virginia in the ACC Championship Game.
  6. LSU opened a 5 point favorite over Georgia, but as of this AM it’s climbed to 7.  Utah is the 6 1/2 point choice over Oregon.  Oklahoma is a 9 point pick over Baylor.
  7. Alabama, the every year participant since the new four team playoff format began, will have to watch the proceedings this year.  A young, injured, and leaky defense gave up 48 to Auburn in the Iron Bowl. And as a tying field goal bounced off of the left upright with two minutes to go, Bama’s playoff chances got bounced as well.

    It was very un Saban like finish to a very un Saban like year.  He yelled at everyone all game.  Of course, he does that regardless of the score and the opponent.  Bama dropped to #9 with it’s second SEC loss .  Auburn moved up from #16 to #11 with the win.

  8.  Minnesota hosted game day Saturday morning.   Everyone wanted to “Row the Boat.”  Of course the snow and cold might have iced over any lake if they tried.  They then went out in said cold and snow and tried to beat Wisconsin.  Winner goes to the BIG 10 Championship Game.  Loser is out in the cold.  Whisky took care of their business dispatching the upstart Golden Gophers 38-17.  Minnie was ranked as high as #7 two weeks back.  They fell to #15.  It’s going to be another cold winter in Minnie.
  9. Some coaches were out in the cold before their season ended.  Some more were out as soon as their seasons ended this Saturday.  Barry Odom had four years to turn around Mizzo in the SEC East.  He didn’t.  Charlie Strong didn’t give any life to USF and was terminated.   BC parted ways with Steve Addazio after seven years.  Frank Wilson succeeded Larry Coker at UTSA but did not succeed in three seasons.
  10. And, finally, Matt Luke got booted from Ole Miss after his kicker booted an extra point try wide in a one point Egg Bowl loss to in state rival Moo St.   If you haven’t seen why the extra point attempt was from farther than usual, you can here.  If you scroll down the Russian announcers add their two rubles as well.  And it’s well worth it.  At press time there was no word on if Adam Schiff wants to subpoena them to testify in the impeachment inquiry.

You’ve had 4 days off.  Get back to it already.

Disappointment From Coast to Coast

With but two weeks to go in the NCAA Football regular season the ink may not be entirely dry, but the dye is mostly cast.  Sure, there are a few “what if’s” available to stoke the fire of the passion of fan bases.

But, for many teams the season’s promise was bright as summer turned to fall.  Now, as fall turns to winter, that promise has turned darker than late afternoon post the change in daylight savings time.  You set you clocks back while some team’s performance set their programs back.

So who are they?  Who are those teams that fell significantly short of meeting the expectations of their followers?  Disappointment can and does come from a few angles.  The program’s history builds in annual minimum standards.  A new, and maybe highly paid, coach can further that.  A good recruiting year or three can further that.  Some teams are bad but somewhat expected.  Some are disappointing and somewhat unexpected.

Today we begin part one of our series scanning each of the Power 5 conferences to select the most disappointing performance.  We’ll start out west and work our way east.

 

PAC 12

Most Disappointing

In 2016 Washington made the FBS playoffs as a four seed.  2019 is respected head coach Chris Petersen’s sixth year at the helm.  Therefore his system(s) are in place.  His culture is in place.  And, it’s his coaching staff and his recruits.  In 2016-2018 ten or more win seasons were the norm.  The PAC 12 seemed like it would come down to three teams vying for supremacy.  Oregon, Utah, and Washington were the preseason favs.  Oregon and Utah have lived up to the billing.  Each has one loss and seem to be on a collision course in the PAC 12 Championship game.

Washington returned several starters from a top 15 nationally ranked defense.  On offense talented, but unproven, Jacob Eason took over at QB.  The five star recruit started at Georgia as a freshman before transferring back closer to home.

The Huskies gave us a hint of what was to come dropping a 20-19 contest at home to California in week two.  In week six they traveled to Stanford and fell 23-13.  The Cardinal isn’t a very good team this year either.  Close home losses in back to back games to Oregon and Utah sealed their fate for 2019.

Their record is 6-4 overall, but only 3-4 in the conference.  They travel to Colorado before a season ending home rivalry game v. Washington St.  Washington is bowl eligible but they aren’t going anywhere near any bowl they aspired to prior to the start of the year.

Washington is the most disappointing PAC 12 team this year.

Also Considered

BBR took a good look at Arizona as well.  Year two for Kevin Sumlin is headed in the wrong direction.  His record overall is 9-11 and counting until Arizona cuts him loose.  Maybe he gets a third year.  Maybe.  The Wildcats are 2-5 in conference and 4-6 overall.  They’ve lost five straight.  With Utah and Arizona St ahead a 4-8 record is probable.  Their wins are over Northern Arizona, UCLA, and a fading Colorado team.  Whoop tee do.  The season began with a loss to Hawaii.  Ouch.

If expectations were higher they might have beat out Washington for the top spot.  But, if Kevin Sumlin is your coach and you have high expectations you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

 

Tomorrow we take a look at Big 12 and the ACC.  And, as we do you’ll see that Kevin Sumlin isn’t the only year two coach who’s fallen short of alumni, booster, and fan expectations.

The new AP Top 25 Poll is out.  College football is getting deeper into November and the “what if” scenarios are getting a bit more interesting.  Take stroll across the football and as you digest the Ten Piece Nuggets below.

  1.  The top three remained in order LSU, THE Ohio St. U., and Clemson.  They put 58, 56, and 52 points respectively on Ole Miss, Rutgers, and Wake Forest.  No respect at all actually.  They won by 21, 35, and 49 points.
  2. The schedule toughens (finally) for THE.  They host Penn St this week, then travel to Ann Arbor to close out the regular season.  The oddsmakers don’t think the schedule toughens too much though.  THE is favored by a big 18 points over the Nittany Lions.  Clemson is off after their 11-0 start.  They travel across the great state of South Carolina to face South Carolina in two weeks.  They’ll be favored by a similar big number we suspect.  LSU is a huge 43 1/2 point favorite at home hosting awful Arkansas Saturday.  Arkansas was off last week after firing their head coach earlier in the week.
  3. Georgia, now #4, and Alabama, now #5, flipped spots.  This matches their position in the playoff poll.  Georgia played tough D for 60 minutes and held on 21-14 at Auburn.  If you like punting it was the game of the month for you.  There were 18 punts in all with Georgia punting 11 of those.  Georgia punter Jake Camarda averaged 50.7 yds/punt and dropped more than a few inside of the ten.  Can a punter win player of the week honors?  Punters get no respect.
  4. Alabama won a one sided game 38-7 and lost a great QB.  Shortly before halftime Tua Tagovailoa went down hard underneath two Mississippi St. lineman and was in obvious severe pain.  He’ll need hip surgery and his season is over.  His NCAA career is likely over as well.  Questions abound.  Should he have been playing at all?  He looked ok v. LSU after a high ankle sprain procedure, but those things do take time to heal and sing along ” the hip bone is connected to the knee bone and the knee bone is connected to the ankle bone.”  Up 31-7 should he have been pulled already?  Or, don’t injuries happen anywhere and at any time and are just an unfortunate part of the game?
  5. Questions abound for the playoff committee as well.  They consider the “eye test” when voting on rankings.  Does the loss of Tua make the eye wander?  They have publicly said in the past that certain injuries to key players affect their decisions.  This one, with Alabama lurking at #5 as of this moment, is an interesting one.
  6.  Oregon at #6 and Utah at #7 are watching to see what the committee has to say about the loss of Tua.  The two PAC 12 front runners from the North and South Division remain on a one loss only collision course for the conference championship game.  Assuming they do, and for the moment assume Georgia losses to LSU in the SEC Championship, the path is paved for a one loss PAC 12 winner to jump a 2 loss Georgia in the final four.  Too early you say?  Probably it is too early to speculate, but speculate we will.  If Georgia beats LSU does a one loss PAC 12 team get in at all?  Georgia has A&M and the wreck that once was rambling Georgia Tech left.  LSU has aforementioned weak sauce Arkansas and  pesky A&M left.
  7. Oklahoma’s comeback in Waco, down 28-3 and winning 34-31, was quite the game.  The Baylor loss leaves the BIG 12 on the outside looking in for now.  Oklahoma is ranked #8 while Baylor slipped only one spot from #12 to #13.  Each have one loss.  There was no respect for Baylor to begin with for some reason.  The path to the playoffs for a BIG 12 school is filled with too many potholes it seems.
  8. The Minnesota Golden Gophers were looking golden at 9-0 after last week’s home victory over Penn St.  But, a trip to Iowa tested their mettle and tarnished their gold a bit.  Iowa at 6-3 entering the game was a three point favorite somehow.  No respect at all for Minnie.  Those Vegas cats know their business though.  The Hawkeyes prevailed 23-19 in the nation’s farmland.  Why does Iowa grow so much produce and yet their football field is artificial turf?  We digress.
  9.  This week we are doing a piece on the most disappointing teams this year.  Here’s a hint at who one of them might be.  Texas.  They say football is big time in the great state of Texas.  Heck there even is a show called Friday Night Lights.  But, in Austin, the flagship school of the state sits at 6-4.  They’ve beaten no one that is very good and lost to everyone that they’ve been a Vegas underdog to.  Tom Herman, in year two, has underwhelmed.  Texas is unranked and received less top 25 votes than nine other unranked teams.  So that makes the Longhorns #35 sort of.  The Longhorns make the quick trip north on I-35 this week to face a four point home favorite Baylor Bears team.
  10. Appalachian St., Texas A&M, and Virginia Tech jump in at #23, 24, and 25.  As mentioned above A&M closes at home v Georgia and on the road at LSU.  They could really make some late season noise, or they could join Texas as a year long disappointment.  Georgia is a 13 1/2 point favorite to minimize the A&M late season noise opportunity.  A&M is looking for some respect, that I can tell you.

Abby Takes Down Vegas, Year Two Week Eleven

It’s been quite the week for Abby.  She was invited to the White House Lawn (that’s the logical place for the ceremony) to honor her German Shepard buddy, Conan the Dog, who is recovering from some wounds suffered in the operation that took out Baghdadi.  Naturally, she’s been primping a good bit at the doggie parlor ahead of the event.

Meanwhile for the season the 23 wins are trailing the 27 losses.  The bones won count is 45, while lost are 46.

Though, worry not.  While under the hair dryer she’s been taking a long look at this week’s betting opportunities.  And she likes what she sees. Oh, and her hunch bet is hair raising 9 wins against only 2 losses.  The winners follow.

Florida St. +2 1/2 v Boston College – Willie’s gone.  We are counting on a dead cat bounce out of the Seminoles.   Abby doesn’t like cats but will make an exception when it comes to money.  Bob Stoops is watching.   Two bones.

Penn St. -6 1/2 v. Minnesota – This is the “other game” of 8-0 teams this weekend.  P.J. Fleck will have the Golden Gophers playing like their hair is on fire.  But, the Nittany Lions have quite the mane themselves.  The fourth quarter is when James Franklin’s team pulls away.  One bone.

Baylor v. TCU + 2 1/2 –  Baylor is yet another 8-0 team.  No more.  You can’t look ahead to contests v. Texas and Oklahoma.  You’ve heard of the hair of the dog?  This one is the no hair on the Horned Frog.  TCU wins straight up.  Two bones.

UAB + 7 1/2 v. Southern Mississippi –  Abby’s been long on UAB all year except last week.  A straight up win here would not surprise her either.  One bone.

Tennessee +1 v. Kentucky –  Tennessee has somewhat quietly beat Mississippi St., South Carolina, and UAB by 10, 20, and 23 points in the last month.  The lone loss was a 35-13 road loss in Tuscaloosa.  Three bones.

Vanderbilt v. Florida over 49 –  Dan Mullen will find something to complain about.  He always does.  But, it won’t be his offense.  Abby smells a total approaching 70 and thinks Florida will get 56 by themselves.

The media has spent two weeks talking about Burrow and Tua and two explosive offenses in “The Game of the Century, Part II.”  On a hunch Abby likes under the 63 point total.  And why wouldn’t she?  The man who oversees the greatest defense in the world will be watching.  How can you trump that?

Ten Piece Nuggets-Sports

If you blinked you missed 25% of the NCAA football season as of this past Saturday.  The NFL concludes week 2 tonight.  But, worry not.  Our Ten Piece Nuggets are here to give you another serving of all that you need to feed the craving.  The nuggets, as always, are the original, no leftovers here.  Help yourself below.

  1.  The NCAA football weekend had exactly zero games where the opponents were both ranked in the top 25.  Chalks dominated the outcomes for the most part.  The Top 10 saw only a very minor change.  Michigan was idle and was passed by.  Passing them by was now 3-0 Utah who won 31-0 over Idaho St.  Michigan only slid one spot to 11.
  2.  A week after Kentucky lost starting quarterback Terry Wilson they ended Florida’s starting quarterback Felipe Franks season in a wild 29-21 loss.  Franks’ gruesome injury was diagnosed as a dislocated ankle.  Backup and one time brief starter Kyle Trask came off the bench to throw for 126 yards and score a rushing touchdown, leading the Gators from 11 down to 19 unanswered points and victory.  Astute local observers of the program contend that Florida might even be better with him starting going forward.  Florida is ranked 9th and has Tennessee coming to The Swamp this weekend.
  3.  Florida is only the fifth highest ranked SEC team however.  Alabama (2), Georgia (3), LSU (4),  and Auburn (8) are higher.  Those four scored 47, 55, 65, and 55 in blowout wins over inferior opponents Saturday.  South Carolina tried to make a game of their tussle with Bama, but only slowed the Tua scoring machine a bit.
  4.  Wisconsin (tied for 13) took last weekend off and have the aforementioned Michigan Wolverines coming to Madison this weekend.   It’s but one of many in conference match ups across the land this coming weekend that will capture more of our attention than last weekend.  Wisconsin has scored 110 points in two games and surrendered a big fat 0.   It would be a good destination for College Gameday.
  5. But, Lee Corso and Company are headed to Athens, Ga.  The Bulldogs host The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in a rematch of the 2017 thriller in South Bend.  With Georgia sitting at 3 and Notre Dame at 7, it’s a good choice.  A Notre Dame win would vault them squarely in to the National Championship Playoff picture even if it’s only late September.
  6.  UCF, which held a parade for itself a couple of years back after an undefeated season found them looking from the outside in at the playoffs, is 3-0 and perched at 15.  The put 45 on a once proud Stanford team.  The Cardinal (we love teams with singular nicknames) surrendered 45 last week to USC as well.  UCF has little opposition until a trip on 10/26 to Temple.  We love parades.
  7.  In the NFL there are teams with franchise quarterbacks and teams without.  If you are with out you get to watch the playoffs from home usually.  If you are with you usually play in the playoffs.  Yesterday the Pittsburgh Steeleers lost Ben Rothliesberger to an elbow injury.  And, Yesterday, the New Orleans Saints lost Drew Brees to a thumb injury.  Both are seeing specialists today to determine the proper medical course of action.  It doesn’t look good for either.  ANd, as a result, they might watch the playoffs from home too.
  8. Brees was interviewed this summer on The Dan Patrick Show a day after the NFL Top 100 players (voted on by the players) were revealed on the NFL Network.  Brees finished second only to Aaron Donald, DL extraordinaire of the LA Rams.  Patrick asked Brees about finishing second to Donald.  Brees said, in effect, that it made total sense as Donald is in a league by himself.  He went on to say that Donald is unblockable and needed to be specifically game planned for.   Yesterday Donald broke thru the line and his hand hit Brees’ hand as he released a pass.  It sent Brees to the locker room and may send him to the operation room soon.
  9. Colin Kapernick’s nike commercial won an Emmy Award last evening.  The spot is dubbed Dream Crazy.  The commercial climaxes with the former San Francisco 49er saying, “Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything.” He concludes the commercial saying, “Don’t ask if your dreams are crazy. Ask if they’re crazy enough.”  Fair enough.  Disruptor enough.
  10.  Fifty years ago ABC disrupted normal fall Monday Night network programming by paying $25.5 million for a three year run of Monday Night Football.  The rest, as they say, is history.   Fifty years later there is Sunday night and Thursday night football to go along with MNF.  MNF was the first in prime time and it was the first with a “three in the booth” announcer set up.  In that first booth was Howard Cosell, Dandy Don Meredith, and?  And?  That’s right, it was Keith Jackson.  Unfortunately, all three are no longer with us.  But MNF sure is.

It’s only four days till Friday.  You’ve been fed.  Now, get after it.

 

Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

Week one has come and gone.  We think it’s always a risk to extrapolate from one game how a team will perform over the year.  But, we are in the risk business.  So, way we go.

  1.  The new AP Top 25 Poll is out.  Clemson and Alabama both dismantled their big underdog opponents.  Clemson received 54 of 62 first place votes.  Alabama scooped up the other eight.  Until further notice they are a clear one and two.
  2.  The rest of the top ten remained very much the same as well.  Underdogs mostly were so for a reason facing the big boys.
  3. Oregon could have beat Auburn but did not.  It was a chance for a PAC 12 team to send an early signal to the US that the conference belongs in the conversation later in the year.   There is plenty of football left but chances like this don’t come along to often once conference play starts.
  4.  The PAC 12 wasn’t done underwhelming though.  Friday night Cincinnati bounced UCLA.  UCLA looked uninspired and soft as Charmin on defense.   Chip Kelly hasn’t done much to regain his lofty status when he departed Oregon for the NFL.
  5. Arizona lost to Hawaii.  Anytime a Power 5 team loses to a non Power 5 eyebrows are raised.  There are plenty of raised eyebrows in Tuscon.   When Swag Kevin Sumlin arrived last year more was expected.   Sumlin’s teams don’t play defense.  Arizona surrendered 45 points, 593 yards in total, with 434 coming via the air.
  6.  PAC 12 Utah looked good handling BYU.  They are one left coast team that plays some D.  Washington might be another.  They worked over Eastern Washington 45-14.  Utah and Washington check in at 12 and 13 in the poll, so there is still time and hope for one or two conference members to emerge as legit national contenders.  It’s the rest of their conference that isn’t helping.
  7.  The race to the bottom of the SEC West is on.  Ole Miss bowed to non Power 5 but good Memphis.  Arkansas struggled at home to beat Portland State 20-13.  They square up Saturday.  The loser has a leg up (or is it down) on the race to the bottom.
  8.  But they weren’t the biggest SEC disappointments.  Nope, and it’s not even close.  The honeymoon is over for Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt after Saturday’s 38-30 loss to Georgia State.  Pruitt burned up all the good will he built in 2018 with upset victories over Auburn and Kentucky.  Some Saban proteges like Jimbo Fisher and Kirby Smart have thrived.  Some like Derek Dooley and Jim McElwain have not.  Pruitt sits in between for now as he just gets year two started.  But in the highly paid SEC coaching business it’s win or else.
  9.  Florida St. and Miami didn’t help the ACC argument.  At least they took on good to real good opponents in week one, so we”ll watch them from here.  Florida St. gave up 38 at home to Boise St.  Miami surrendered 10 sacks to an aggressive Florida defense in a sloppily played game that Florida held on to win.  There is Clemson in the ACC, and there are all others.  If you wanted to bet over the season win total for Clemson, the line was 11 and 1/2 games.  So you had to think they would run the regular season table.  In the next two weeks they host Texas A&M and travel to #21 Syracuse.  If they are 3-0 after that, you can  pay windmake plans to head to the pay window early cause the schedule won’t have on team on it (home or away) that isn’t the underdog by 15 or more.
  10. A&M is getting 17 and 1/2 in that game.  Bama is favored by 55 over New Mexico St.  55.  It’s rare that you see a line that high.  Usually Vegas will just take the game off of the board.  The crew from ESPN head to Austin for College Gameday.  LSU heads there as a 5.5 favorite for now.  The line has moved 3 points in ten days.   It’s early but give us A&M and LSU.  We’ll skip the Bama game like Vegas should have.

Ten Piece Nuggets-Sports

We’re one short week away from NCAA college football.  Our hunger is at it’s peak.  The Ten Nuggets on various sports below will have to tide you over.  And, tide you over they will.  Yum.

  1.  Speaking of the tides, the Alabama crimson one remains the betting favorite for the NCAA Championship. One unnamed analyst that we trust told us that he believes that 9 of the expected 22 starters this year for Bama will eventually be first round NFL draft picks.  Combine that talent with Saban’s high work ethic, coaching staff, knowledge and experience and it’s an uphill climb for others.
  2. Their season win total bet is 11.  So Vegas is not willing to offer you a loss by them and let you collect. Well, at least you would push.  It’s a high bar, but see point one above.  We don’t like high overs, and this one is -160.  But would you really bet the other side?  Will Bama lose twice?  If they do, they won’t be in the playoffs for the first time since, well, ever.  “Ever” is all five years since the current playoff format began, and Bama is five for five in appearances.
  3. Maybe you like Clemson even more?  That bar is even higher.  Their season win total is set at 11 and 1/2.  One loss there and you lose. No pushes occur when lines are on halves.  This over bet is -125.  Steep!  Sheesh.  The smart bet here is under at -105.  But, it’s only smart if Clemson stumbles or someone rises up in the ACC.  Could Texas A and M out of conference and on the road beat them?  Doubtful.  But what a signature win it would be for Jimbo Fisher.
  4. Someone either named Ed Orgeron or Tom Herman will get a signature win of their own in week two.  LSU travels to play Texas in an early season matchup of two AP preseason top ten ranked teams.  LSU is ranked 6th while the resurgent Longhorns are 10th.  The winner gets a strong pelt on the resume wall for down the road playoff consideration.  Both teams have to run through their conference gauntlet as well of course.  Would a one loss to Alabama team named LSU get in?  Would a one loss to Oklahoma team named Texas get in?  It’s WAY too early to wonder?  But, why not wonder?  The NCAA football season is too short to begin with.  Let the party begin.
  5.  The SEC dominates the upper part of the first AP poll.  Alabama is 2, Georgia 3, LSU 6, Florida 8, A&M 12, and Auburn 16.  But the Big 10 actually has seven teams to the six in the SEC.  The Ohio St and Michigan are in the top ten while Penn St., Michigan St., Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska are all in it starting at 15 and below.  Let they party begin we said.
  6. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went just 1-for-6 for zero yards and an interception on Monday night in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last September.  Garoppolo finished the night, which ended with a 24-15 victory over the Denver Broncos, with a 0.0 passer rating.  You probably can only go up from there.
  7.  Oakland Raiders GM Mike Mayock and Head Coach Jon Gruden beamed on while being interviewed during the NFL Draft last April.  They repeatedly told us that they drafted “football guys who had high character and wanted to play.”  Seems like they didn’t use the same template for their big trade in the offseason.  New Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown has filed a new grievance against the NFL over his not having a full calendar year grace period to find a helmet that works for him.  It’s the third time since camp started that Brown has either left a practice or filed a grievance over what all other NFL payers have already moved forward from.  Mayock said Sunday that Brown had left camp over the helmet issue, and it was “time for him to be all-in or all-out.”  We think that it’s time for him to grow up.
  8. Meanwhile Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, who is nearly five weeks into a holdout over his contract, is training rigorously in California he says and is staying ready to play football while he waits to see if the Chargers will succumb to his new contract demands.  Gordon has told the Chargers through his representation that if he does not receive a new deal, he will sit out.
  9. What do Garrappolo, Brown, and Gordon have in common?  They all play for California based teams.  Garappolo is dreaming of better performances, Brown of better helmets, and Gordon of better money.  California dreaming.

On to the MLB injury front we go.  Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa left after one inning against the Detroit Tigers on Monday because of back discomfort, the team said.  he is day to day.  Let’s hope he doesn’t call a masseuse to work out his issues again.  Meanwhile Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will miss the remainder of the regular season with a left elbow injury but is expected to avoid Tommy John surgery after a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews confirmed a previous diagnosis of inflammation, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.  Sale’s season ending injury to the wind out of any sails that the 2018 Champion Red Sox had for 2019.  They are now 16 games behind the eventual division winner NY Yankees and 6 games behind the second of two wild card teams.
