Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

It’s Monday and it’s time to take a look at the NCAA football  and it’s AP Top 25.  Week eight is in the books, and we cook up ten nuggets to review it.

  1.  Alabama remains entrenched at #1.  They won the home game against Tennessee 35-13, and lost a QB in the process.  Tua Tagovailoa underwent surgery for a high ankle sprain yesterday and is expected to be back for the early November showdown with LSU, who remains at #2 after a 36-13 win at Mississippi St.
  2.  Clemson’s won 45-10 over Louisville on the field.  But, off of the field they lost one place in the polls.  They are now #4 after Dabo Swinney told reporters that his sophomore QB Trevor Lawrence had four really bad plays in the game.  Their loss was THE Ohio St University’s gain as THE climbed to three.  THE beat Northwestern all sixty minutes long in a 52-3 Friday night blowout.
  3. Oklahoma #5 and Penn St #6 round out the top six teams all with 7-0 records.  Oklahoma stayed at #5 while Penn St jumped into the spot formerly occupied by fellow Big 10 school Wisconsin.  Whisky looked hungover all Saturday afternoon losing to lowly Illinois 24-23.  James McCourt kicked a 39-yard field as time expired and Illinois pulled off the biggest upset of the college football season bar none.  The Badgers dropped a steep seven spots to #13.  Their playoff dreams are now a headache and need two aspirin.  Penn St jumped to a 21-0 lead at home over Michigan then held on to win 28-21.  Jim Harbaugh’s team suffered another loss to a big time team in a Big Ten game in a big time moment.  He decided to question the officiating. “It’ll be interesting to compare some of the different scenarios in the game, in terms of calls,” Harbaugh said.  Perhaps a look in the mirror would be interesting as well.
  4. Florida and Notre Dame begin the parade of 6-1 clubs at #7 and # 8 respectively.  Florida hoped over ND moving from 9 to 7 a week after their first loss as they fought off a game South Carolina Gamecocks team in the rain in SC.  Will Muschamp had a few choice words for a few refs after a few bad calls and non calls post game.  He said he had nothing more to say about it.  Then, almost under his breath he uttered “gutless” describing the refs decision to flag him for unsportsmanlike conduct.    His wallet might be a few “dollars less” after the NCAA takes a look.  ND was idle before they travel to Michigan this week.
  5. Auburn jumped two spots back into the top ten at #9 after running over Arkansas 51-10.  Arkansas is a bad football team.  Their fake punt, which you can see here, could be the worst designed special teams play, well, ever.  The Auburn Tigers travel to Baton Rouge for a top ten showdown/throwdown with the LSU Tigers Saturday.
  6.  Georgia wore down Kentucky 21-0 in the mud and rain in Athens a week after they were upset by SC.  Georgia threw for a measly 35 yards all game on just 12 attempts.  Kentucky one upped that, or one downed that, throwing for a measly 17 yards on 18 attempts.  If you missed the game you don’t have to brag about it.
  7. Oregon and Utah rep the PAC 12 and are ranked #11 and #12.  Oregon’s season opening, last seven seconds loss to Auburn is deep in the rear view mirror now.  The Ducks went to Washington and escaped with a fine 35-31 win.  They’ll need help to climb back into any playoff discussion.  But with only two road games left of the five remaining, at USC and at #24 Arizona St., they do have an outside shot as others ahead of them square off.
  8.  Baylor says hello, remaining undefeated after an impressive road win at Oklahoma St. 45-21.  The Bears are 7-0 and have Texas and Oklahoma visiting Waco in mid November.  Baylor moved up four spots from 18 to 14.
  9. SMU 7-0, Minnesota 7-0, and Appalachian St. 6-0 round out the undefeated teams at #16, #17, and #21 respectively.  Much like Rodney Dangerfield it seems they get no respect.  Boise St. was undefeated but got bounced at BYU by the Cougars.  Boise St fell from 14 all the way down to 22.
  10. A few early lines are out.  THE Ohio St. U is a home 14 point favorite over Wisconsin.  LSU is a home 12 1/2 point favorite over Auburn.  Michigan is a surprising home 2 1/2 point favorite over the Fighting Irish.

Don’t leave your plate in the sink.  Put it in the dish washer please.

 

Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

The beginning of the work week is upon us.  And, the beginning of almost exclusive NCAA football conference play is also upon us.  You have to take care of business every Saturday in conference play.  If you don’t, someone will be there to take food off of your table.  Here are ten nuggets for your breakfast table to kick start your week.

  1.  A week ago we called the lack of movement in the top ten “frankly boring.”  Like the weather, that changed this past Saturday.  The new AP top 25 is out.  And, Alabama took care of it’s business to remain # 1 with a solid conference road victory over the Texas A&M Aggies 47-28.  Tua T threw his first pick of the year and Alabama had 11 penalties accepted against them.  That’ll make this week’s practice for the Tide anything but frankly boring when Saban tears into his team.
  2. And, previous #5 became this week’s #2.  The fighting Tigers of LSU trailed a talented Florida team after one drive in the third quarter 28-21.  But from there for real Heisman candidate Joe Burrow took over on offense, and Dave Aranda’s leaky defense took over Florida’s offense.  LSU scored 21 unanswered to secure a 42-28 win.  It was it’s second win of the year over a top ten team.  Apparently the voters were impressed.
  3. Clemson and THE Ohio St. University slid one spot each to #3 and #4 respectively.  Clemson rolled a below average Florida St. team 45-14, while THE took the week off after it stymied an offensively challenged Michigan St team 34-10 the week prior.
  4. Oklahoma fans are hot.  The now #5 Sooners beat the then #11 ranked Texas Longhorns by seven points.  Oklahoma feels like they should be ranked higher.  If their Red River Rivalry score would have better reflected how they dominated Texas between the 20’s, maybe they would be.  Jalen Hurts dazzled at times and at others made poor decisions.  The only ranked team left on the Sooner’s schedule is down the road with #18 Baylor.  They’ll need some help to climb.  And, they’ll likely get it.
  5. Knock knock.  Who’s there?  The Big 10.  The Big 10 who?  The Big 10 who now have Wisconsin at #6 and Penn St. at  #7 to go along with THE at #4.  Wisconsin shut out said offensively challenged Michigan St. 38-0.  It’s Whisky’s fourth shutout in six games.  On the year they have allowed a mere 29 points in total.  Impressive.  Penn St. held off offensively challenged Iowa in Iowa 17-12.   Iowa has scored 18, 3, and 12 in conference games worth mentioning.  Thirty against Rutgers doesn’t count for much.
  6. The loud thud you heard was Georgia falling from #3 to #10.  We stated above that you have to take care of business every Saturday in conference play.  If you don’t, someone will be there to take food off of your table.   The Gamecocks of South Carolina took away UGA’s dog bowl and did so between the Athens’ hedges.    It’s a big win for Will Muschamp’s continued tenure at SC.  It’s a big loss for Kirby Smart’s team.  They’ll now need to beat Florida, win the SEC East, and beat the West opponent in the SEC Championship Game to have any shot at barking about inclusion in the playoffs.
  7.  Notre Dame sits somewhat quietly at #8.  Georgia beat them a few weeks ago.  We aren’t sure how they get the #8 spot, two ahead of Georgia.  But, Georgia only has Georgia to blame.  The Irish ran for over 300 yards in South Bend, and held on at the wire to defeat a game USC team.
  8.  Oregon remains the highest ranked PAC 12 team checking in at #12.  They’ve been impressive after a season opening loss to Auburn.  Don’t believe us?  Ask Colorado who got worked on both sides of the ball in a 45-3 wipe out.  On defense, the Ducks lead the conference with an average of 8.7 points per game surrendered. Oregon does face a test in Week 8 — a road trip to No. 25 Washington that is a must-win if the Ducks look to keep any shot at the playoff alive. The Ducks are a 2 1/2 point early week favorite.
  9. Who else remains undefeated after seven weeks?  If you said Boise St #14, Baylor #18,  SMU #19, Minnesota #20, and Appalachian St. #24 you’ve been watching too much college ball.  Is there a 2017 UCF type run in one of them?  We don’t know.  But, don’t sleep on Baylor.  Their schedule toughens from here.  But, Texas and Oklahoma both have to travel to Waco.
  10.  Congrats to Tennessee for getting an SEC win 20-10 over the Mississippi St. Bulldogs.  The season opening loss to Georgia St. stings a wee bit less now.  The Volunteers should not celebrate for very long, however.  They travel to Tuscaloosa this weekend for their yearly “natural rival” game v. Alabama.  Bama is a big 34 1/2 point favorite to kick around the team with the blue tick hound.  Big spreads litter the Vegas Strip this week.  Ohio St, Clemson, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, and LSU  are favored over conference opponents by 27, 23, 29, 33, and 19 points respectively.

It’s a quick 4 days till Friday.

Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

The used to be Monday, that turned into Tuesday NCAA football Ten Piece Nuggets, slid all the way to Hump Day this week.  The foray into all that is Daryl Morey occupied our eyes and ears yesterday.  That said, it’s never too early in the season, or late in the week, to worry about the dreaded winter weight gain.  To help you manage your weight, we deep fried just eight nuggets this morning.

  1. The weekly AP Top 25 is (has been) out.  And, frankly it’s boring.  Maybe this week, as we get into the conference schedules a bit deeper, will be the “oh wow, that happened” week.  Stop us if you heard this before, but Alabama and Clemson remain one and two.
  2. THE Ohio St moved into a tie with Georgia at #3.  THE beat up an average, then #25 and now unranked, Michigan St. team.   Why this was impressive is yet to be determined.   We suspect the Northern block of voters banded together to dot the letter “i” in Ohio St. much like the sousaphone player in the band does weekly.  Georgia beat Tennessee (doesn’t everyone these days?) by 29 and somehow lost a smidgeon of ground.  Maybe UGA the dog can dot the “i” as only he can in Georgia next time.
  3. Florida jumped three spots up to #7 with their “game of the week” win in The Swamp over a great D, and average O, Auburn team.  Florida has a “D” in their name and a “D” on the field.  Auburn turned it over several times.  If you are a Florida fan you can say that the Gators took it from them if you prefer.  Auburn’s Bo Nix joined a litany of freshman QB’s to go on the road in a big SEC contest and come away looking like the freshman they are.   Auburn has LSU and Georgia in the next three weeks.   Good luck.
  4. Florida has LSU this week in another swamp.  This one is in Baton Rouge.   College Game Day will airboat in for the contest.  LSU is favored by an eyebrow raising 13 points.  LSU’s offense in the last 13 years hasn’t averaged 13 points a game in SEC clashes it seems.  Joe Burrow, who now geauxs by Joe Burreaux, leads a Tiger offense that has scored an SEC all time record of 273 points after five games.  Lee Corso is sharpening his pencil and trying on Tiger gear.
  5. Wisconsin stands 5-0 and tall at number 8.  They have shut out opponents three times in five games this year.  Impressive even if those three opponents were not.   Junior RB Jonathan Taylor is averaging 7.2 yards a carry, and has 16 touchdowns in five games.  He wants one of the three chairs inside of the Downtown Athletic Club in NY in December.  Michigan St. tries to slow down the big red machine this weekend.  Good luck.
  6.  Who is the highest ranked one loss team?  It’s Notre Dame at #9.  They host USC under the watchful eye of Touchdown Jesus this weekend.  They are a win over the Trojans and a few upsets away from sneaking back into the short list conversation for the playoff four.  Ye have of little faith you say?  While conference teams beat up conference teams, ND only has one ranked team left on their schedule.  It’s Michigan next week in Ann Arbor.   Michigan’s record under Jim “Judge Judy” Harbaugh against ranked teams gives one little reason to believe that ND loses a verdict in another game this year.
  7. The PAC 12 continues, like Rodney Dangerfield, to get no respect.  Oregon is #13 and the highest ranked team from the conference.  Utah checks in at #15.  And, don’t look now, but the Arizona St Sun Devils moved up to #18.  Respect for the conference will need to be earned, not given.
  8. Wake Forest, Baylor, SMU, and Memphis might feel like they get no respect as well.  They are all undefeated and ranked anywhere from #19 to #23.  The Baylor Bears leaped 10 voting spots to jump in at #22.  It’s the first time they have been ranked since 2016.  Next week’s nuggets are free if you can guess the Baylor head coach?  It’s Matt Ruhle who left Temple after 2015 to guide the then disgraced Baylor program back after a disastrous on and off the field year.  On the field they went 1-11 that year.
  9. SMU, and coach Sonny Dykes are actually one spot ahead of Baylor at #21.  Dykes salary of $3.5 million and Rhule’s of $3 million are a combined $1 million less than Jimbo Fisher’s yearly haul from another Texas school.  A&M is ranked a bit below both at #24.  Bama makes a whistle stop in College Station this weekend.  If you were all aboard the Jimbo train when he was hired, you might want to see the Aggies slow down the Alabama “bang, bang choo choo train, come on Bama do your thing” Crimson Tide.  The Red Elephants are favored by 17.
  10.  Another savior anointed in Texas is/was Tom Herman.  His $5.75 million yearly takes on Lincoln Riley and his $4 million in the Red River Shootout.  Savior Herman’s team beat Riley’s Oklahoma Sooners last year.   And, the Tea Sippers went wild.   Vegas isn’t impressed.  The Sooners are installed as an 11 point favorite.  It seems like a lot of points to the BBR research/analytical/gambling department.

It’s always nice to get 10 when you were expecting 8 nuggets isn’t it?  You couldn’t help yourself.  We understand.  You were over served.  We know the feeling.

Flip the page on your calendar this AM.  October has arrived.  And, thankfully with it will come some Power Five NCAA in conference football games.  We’ve had far too few as there is an extra weekend built into the schedule. Week six is here.  We review week five with a Ten Piece Nuggets order to chew on below.

  1.  The new AP Top 25 is out.  Clemson’s near loss was Alabama’s gain.  Saturday the Tide rolled Ole Miss 59-31, and yesterday they rolled into the top spot in the latest poll.  Alabama has this coming weekend off before they roll into College Station next weekend.
  2.  It’s hard not to like Mack Brown directing his NC Tar Heel team to go for the win at the end of their 60 minute donnybrook with Clemson.  It’s hard to like the play that was called however.   Clemson escaped with a 21-20 win.  They haven’t been playing as well as some others early on.  Maybe this near loss and a drop to no. 2 will do them some good longer term this season.  They too are idle this weekend before Florida St comes calling next weekend.
  3.  Georgia was off Saturday and remained at #3.  Number four LSU was too.   However they dropped to #5 as the voters were impressed by THE Ohio State University taking all of the corn that they wanted back home from Nebraska.  They shucked the Cornhuskers 48-7.   You have to harvest before the first frost.  Nebraska’s Scott Frost has a long way to go to bring Lincoln back to relevance.
  4.  The rest of the top ten remained as it was except Notre Dame moved up one as Florida moved down one.  They are now ninth and tenth respectively.
  5.  Florida has a chance to erase that little drop and then some this weekend.   Lee Corso, his pencil complete with eraser, and the gang descend on The Swamp for ESPN’s College Gameday.  The Gators host Auburn in a #9 v. #7 showdown.   Both teams look very strong on defense.  Both teams are undefeated.  Something has to give.  It should be a rock ’em sock ’em afternoon in the heat and humidity.  Kickoff is set for a steamy 3:30 pm eastern.
  6.  There was a good bit of bouncing around in the lower half of the polls.  No one moved more than Arizona St. though.  A week removed from a disappointing home loss to Colorado, the Sun Devils went to Berkley and beat the Golden Bears.   Herm Edwards and crew entered the top 25 at #20 jumping from a previously voted counted #37 spot.  California was the last undefeated PAC 12 team.  The state of California signed into law a bill that allows NCAA players to be paid for using their image/likeness starting in 2023.  Maybe the PAC 12 will have a national contender again by then.
  7.  Virginia dropped from the unbeatens and slid five to #23 with their loss the the Fighting Irish.  The Texas A&M Aggies dropped to #25 even though they won.  The voters were underwhelmed by the year to date underwhelming Aggies as they held on late to beat a 23 point underhog (see what we did there?) by four.
  8. Who’s the second best team in the ACC?  Florida St.?  Miami?  Virginia?  How about Wake Forest?  The Demon Deacons are a very quiet 5-0.  They check in at #22.   The schedule stiffens from here.  But, for now they’ve beaten everyone in front of them to date including the pesky bunch of Carolinans from just up Tobacco Road.
  9. Say hello to SMU.  They are ranked for the first time since the football program received the death penalty for NCAA rules violations in 1987. The 5-0 Mustangs entered the poll at #24 after winning 48-21 at USF on Saturday. They’re off to the school’s best overall start since 1983, with three road wins under their belt including a then ranked TCU.  Under second-year coach Sonny Dykes, the Mustangs are playing their best ball since the Pony Express days of Eric Dickerson and Craig James.  Hey Cali, Texas was already paying it’s players way back then.
  10.  Some early lines are out.  That matchup of the week has Auburn a three point favorite in The Swamp over Florida.  Washington is a whopping 14 1/2 point road favorite over Stanford.  Texas travels east to West Virginia as an 11 point favorite.   The three home dogs and the points seems like a fun three team parlay.

The entire BBR staff is traveling to BR for an 11AM LSU v. Utah St. Saturday kickoff.  They will also be in that number to cover the Saints hosting the Buccaneers the next day.  The work never ends.

Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

The Ten Piece Nuggets are a day late but not  a dollar short on quality below.  This writer and the entire BBR staff was in Nashville doing some research for an upcoming expose’ on Vanderbilt football or a lack thereof.  Put your napkin in your lap.  Here they are.

  1.  The latest AP Top 25 came out Sunday.  There was some movement both up and down for the first time in a couple of weeks.  The top six (THE moved from 6 to 5 and Oklahoma drooped one to 6 from 5) were quiet.  Ohio St. squeaked by a slightly out manned Miami of Ohio squad 76-5.
  2. Notre Dame was seven and they fought hard in Athens, Ga. but lost 23-17 and dropped to 10.  It’ll be hard, but not impossible, for them to climb back into the playoff conversation from there.
  3. Wisconsin was the big winner on the week.  Their demolition of Mr Khaki’s, aka Jim Harbaugh, and his Wolverines vaulted them from 13th to 8th.  Harbaugh is making top five coaching money in Ann Arbor.  His record in five years there is 0-4 against Ohio State, 1-9 vs. top-10 opponents, 0-7 as an underdog, 1-6 on the road against ranked opponents, and has five losses by at least 21 points, including three of their last five games.  Pundits spend the entire off season talking about coaches on the hot seat.  We wonder if they missed one.
  4. Auburn’s Gus Malzahn was named on a few of these “experts” lists.   They are ranked 7th after a solid road win in College Station over the Aggies.  Known for his offensive genius, maybe he should get some credit for a mean, athletic defense that misses very few tackles.  Maybe he gets to keep his job for a bit longer after all.
  5. Top five coaching money gets deposited weekly in Jimbo Fischer’s checking account too.  After a road loss to Clemson, and a home loss to Auburn the A&M program sits at 2-2.   The schedule still has three undefeated to date teams in Georgia, Alabama, and LSU on it plus a home date with 3-1 Mississippi St.  It looks like Kellon Mond hasn’t taken a step up in year two of Jimbo’s QB whispering yet.  Therefore, the Aggies haven’t yet either.  With 75 million guaranteed over 10 years Jimbo’s chair comes equipped with a cooling device.  The Aggies polled at #23.
  6.  The PAC 12 says don’t forget about us.  They have teams at 13,15,17,19, and 21.  Five consecutive odd numbers for five somewhat odd teams.  No. 13 Oregon’s season opening loss to Auburn looks less damaging by the week.  Who has the nation’s longest defensive “held under 24 points scoring streak of 15 games?”  That’s California saying hello at #15.  The Golden Bears beat the Black Bears (formerly known as the politically incorrect Rebels) in Oxford. MS.  Cali is the PAC 12’s only undefeated team four weeks in at 4-0.
  7.  Washington hammered BYU in Utah 45-19 and moved up five to #17.  Utah, a five point favorite, lost on Friday night to USC and is #19. That’s a tough loss for a team with high hopes for 2019.   Mr. Hot Seat himself, Clay Helton, has his Trojans riding higher on the horse at 3-1, and is on his third QB in doing so.  Maybe the climate really is changing in LA as his hot seat has cooled considerably with the solid start and doing so with a 3rd string QB for now.  USC is ranked 21st.
  8.  Two non Power 5 “thorns in your side” teams moved in opposite directions.  On Friday night Boise St. beat a pretty good Air Force team and improved to 4-0 and are ranked 16th.   Meanwhile, parade plans in Orlando got rained on.  U. of Central Florida, UCF, slid from 15 to 22nd.  Pittsburgh handed them a 35-34 road loss in a game that wasn’t really as close as it’s final score.
  9. With ND (10th) at Virginia (18th) the only game between two ranked opponents this coming weekend, and with College Gameday just in Georgia when they played ND, the crew will descend upon Lincoln, Nebraska this weekend.   The unranked Cornhuskers host THE Ohio St University.  Scott Frost is trying to turn a once storied program around.  Vegas thinks this won’t be the week that it starts.  They have THE installed as a 17 point road favorite.  Will Lee Corso even consider putting on Lil’ Red’s hat, aka Herbie Husker?  He won’t if Kirk “Herbie” Herbstreit, former Buckeye, has anything to say about it.
  10. We took a long look at the coming weekend’s early betting lines for interesting ones.  They are few and far between.  One that caught our eye was Stanford is only a four point road favorite at Oregon State.  My oh my, how far and how quickly has the Cardinal program fallen this year?  Stanford beat Northwestern to open the season, but dropped three in a row to USC, UCF, and Oregon since.  Might Stanford head coach David Shaw feel a touch of global seat warming?  Not yet.

Yesterday was the first day of fall.  Fall, football, and Ten Piece Nuggets go together like hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.

Ten Piece Nuggets-Sports

If you blinked you missed 25% of the NCAA football season as of this past Saturday.  The NFL concludes week 2 tonight.  But, worry not.  Our Ten Piece Nuggets are here to give you another serving of all that you need to feed the craving.  The nuggets, as always, are the original, no leftovers here.  Help yourself below.

  1.  The NCAA football weekend had exactly zero games where the opponents were both ranked in the top 25.  Chalks dominated the outcomes for the most part.  The Top 10 saw only a very minor change.  Michigan was idle and was passed by.  Passing them by was now 3-0 Utah who won 31-0 over Idaho St.  Michigan only slid one spot to 11.
  2.  A week after Kentucky lost starting quarterback Terry Wilson they ended Florida’s starting quarterback Felipe Franks season in a wild 29-21 loss.  Franks’ gruesome injury was diagnosed as a dislocated ankle.  Backup and one time brief starter Kyle Trask came off the bench to throw for 126 yards and score a rushing touchdown, leading the Gators from 11 down to 19 unanswered points and victory.  Astute local observers of the program contend that Florida might even be better with him starting going forward.  Florida is ranked 9th and has Tennessee coming to The Swamp this weekend.
  3.  Florida is only the fifth highest ranked SEC team however.  Alabama (2), Georgia (3), LSU (4),  and Auburn (8) are higher.  Those four scored 47, 55, 65, and 55 in blowout wins over inferior opponents Saturday.  South Carolina tried to make a game of their tussle with Bama, but only slowed the Tua scoring machine a bit.
  4.  Wisconsin (tied for 13) took last weekend off and have the aforementioned Michigan Wolverines coming to Madison this weekend.   It’s but one of many in conference match ups across the land this coming weekend that will capture more of our attention than last weekend.  Wisconsin has scored 110 points in two games and surrendered a big fat 0.   It would be a good destination for College Gameday.
  5. But, Lee Corso and Company are headed to Athens, Ga.  The Bulldogs host The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in a rematch of the 2017 thriller in South Bend.  With Georgia sitting at 3 and Notre Dame at 7, it’s a good choice.  A Notre Dame win would vault them squarely in to the National Championship Playoff picture even if it’s only late September.
  6.  UCF, which held a parade for itself a couple of years back after an undefeated season found them looking from the outside in at the playoffs, is 3-0 and perched at 15.  The put 45 on a once proud Stanford team.  The Cardinal (we love teams with singular nicknames) surrendered 45 last week to USC as well.  UCF has little opposition until a trip on 10/26 to Temple.  We love parades.
  7.  In the NFL there are teams with franchise quarterbacks and teams without.  If you are with out you get to watch the playoffs from home usually.  If you are with you usually play in the playoffs.  Yesterday the Pittsburgh Steeleers lost Ben Rothliesberger to an elbow injury.  And, Yesterday, the New Orleans Saints lost Drew Brees to a thumb injury.  Both are seeing specialists today to determine the proper medical course of action.  It doesn’t look good for either.  ANd, as a result, they might watch the playoffs from home too.
  8. Brees was interviewed this summer on The Dan Patrick Show a day after the NFL Top 100 players (voted on by the players) were revealed on the NFL Network.  Brees finished second only to Aaron Donald, DL extraordinaire of the LA Rams.  Patrick asked Brees about finishing second to Donald.  Brees said, in effect, that it made total sense as Donald is in a league by himself.  He went on to say that Donald is unblockable and needed to be specifically game planned for.   Yesterday Donald broke thru the line and his hand hit Brees’ hand as he released a pass.  It sent Brees to the locker room and may send him to the operation room soon.
  9. Colin Kapernick’s nike commercial won an Emmy Award last evening.  The spot is dubbed Dream Crazy.  The commercial climaxes with the former San Francisco 49er saying, “Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything.” He concludes the commercial saying, “Don’t ask if your dreams are crazy. Ask if they’re crazy enough.”  Fair enough.  Disruptor enough.
  10.  Fifty years ago ABC disrupted normal fall Monday Night network programming by paying $25.5 million for a three year run of Monday Night Football.  The rest, as they say, is history.   Fifty years later there is Sunday night and Thursday night football to go along with MNF.  MNF was the first in prime time and it was the first with a “three in the booth” announcer set up.  In that first booth was Howard Cosell, Dandy Don Meredith, and?  And?  That’s right, it was Keith Jackson.  Unfortunately, all three are no longer with us.  But MNF sure is.

Ten Piece Nuggets- Sports

NCAA, NFL, and MLB dominate the menu today.   There is much to chew on.  The Ten Piece Nuggets are served.

  1. The new AP Top 25 poll is out following Week 2 action.   LSU has moved into the top five after beating Texas 45-38 in a thrilling affair in Austin on Saturday night. With LSU jumping Oklahoma to take the No. 4 spot, the SEC now has three of the top four teams in the country, as the Tigers join No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Georgia.
  2. It’s very early in the season and these things sort themselves out when conference play starts in earnest.   The Big 10 might have plenty to say about it as well.  They check in at spots 6,10,13,14,18,19, and 21.  So, that’s seven spots for the Big 10 conference that actually has 14 teams.  Got it?
  3. Big 10 Maryland’s got it.  They are #21 in the poll after a 63-20 pounding of Syracuse Saturday.  This follows up a 79-0 blasting of Howard.  The combined 142 points are the fourth most in NCAA history in the first two games of any season.  It was but a few years ago that the Terrapins were lower than a turtle’s belly.  Kudos to former New Mexico HC and Bama OC Mike Locksley.  This is year one for him in the Maryland HC role after a 1-5 interim record when he took over for fired Randy Edsall from the Maryland staff in 2015.
  4. The Big 10 is scoring big time too.  Penn State has scored 124 points, Wisconsin 110, Ohio St 87, and even Indiana has 86, all in two games.  Maybe the rust belt has rolled out some shiny new offense models off of the assembly lines.   It’s on to conference play for them mostly as well.  Though Maryland goes to Temple, and curiously is only a 7 point favorite.
  5.  It wasn’t the best weekend for the great state of Texas in football.  The Longhorns played well, especially on offense,  but lost to LSU as mentioned.  Texas A&M played pretty good defense, but Clemson played better defense and won 24-10.  BBR thinks both teams are on the rise and wonder when the regular season is done if Texas might be 10-2 or even better and A&M around 9-3.  Texas dropped three spots to 12th, while A&M slid only four to 16th.
  6. Washington lost at home to a California team that actually plays decent defense, 20-19.  That leaves Utah at 11th, Oregon at 15th, and Washington St. at 20th.  The PAC 12 continues to disappoint on the national stage.  Other disappointments have to be Florida St., winners over Louisiana Monroe 45-44 thanks to a missed extra point in extra time.  At least they seem hydrated this week.  Syracuse forgot to play defense against Maryland and surrendered 63.  Two AP writers actually voted for Syracuse to still be in the top 25.  Lots of sportswriters and sportscasters go to Syracuse’s fine journalism school.  This might have been two of them.  Tennessee is now 0-2 with a second non conference loss at home.  This time BYU beat them which was an upgrade from a Georgia Southern debacle a week ago.  Note to the Volunteers, the SEC schedule is way tougher than that.  Pruitt needs to prove it, and soon.
  7.  Swinging over to baseball, we ask, ‘where are the pennant races?’  The closest division has the Cubs trailing the Cardinals by 4 games.  That one isn’t over, but with only about 18 games to go, it isn’t terribly close either.  The race for the best record in baseball is on though.  With it comes playoff home field advantage throughout.  The Yankess and the Astros are tied at a sizzling 95-50, while the Dodgers are two back at 93-52.
  8. Even the wild card races aren’t dealing aces.  While the Indians and A’s are only a half game apart for the last spot in the AL, the Rays look like they are in.  In the NL, Washington is two ahead of Chicago who is two ahead of Arizona for those two wild card spots.  Yawn.
  9. The NFL kicked off season 100.  We refuse to read too much into week one.  Or do we?  New England looked like New England.  Miami is roster purging and lost 59-10 to Baltimore.  If you live in Miami you can always enjoy the beaches, especially South Beach.  Speaking of south, The NFC South is 1-3 and the AFC South is 1-3 after one week.   Do the Falcons make it through the year without a coaching change?  Dan Quinn looked like a rising star four years ago.  Now, it looks like Arthur Blank has a DIY project to fix them.  Luckily he’s a Home Depot kind of guy.
  10. Is Antonio Brown fixable?  Master craftsman Bill Belicheck starts the remodel this week.  It’s a project.   BBR wishes the entire mess would get far less air time.  Brown makes yesteryear guys like Keyshawn Johnson ( “just throw me the damn ball”) look like choir boys.  Less talented players who disrupt like this would be out of the league by now.  This is the last whistle stop for Antonio.  We hope.

Ten Piece Nuggets-NCAA Football

Week one has come and gone.  We think it’s always a risk to extrapolate from one game how a team will perform over the year.  But, we are in the risk business.  So, way we go.

  1.  The new AP Top 25 Poll is out.  Clemson and Alabama both dismantled their big underdog opponents.  Clemson received 54 of 62 first place votes.  Alabama scooped up the other eight.  Until further notice they are a clear one and two.
  2.  The rest of the top ten remained very much the same as well.  Underdogs mostly were so for a reason facing the big boys.
  3. Oregon could have beat Auburn but did not.  It was a chance for a PAC 12 team to send an early signal to the US that the conference belongs in the conversation later in the year.   There is plenty of football left but chances like this don’t come along to often once conference play starts.
  4.  The PAC 12 wasn’t done underwhelming though.  Friday night Cincinnati bounced UCLA.  UCLA looked uninspired and soft as Charmin on defense.   Chip Kelly hasn’t done much to regain his lofty status when he departed Oregon for the NFL.
  5. Arizona lost to Hawaii.  Anytime a Power 5 team loses to a non Power 5 eyebrows are raised.  There are plenty of raised eyebrows in Tuscon.   When Swag Kevin Sumlin arrived last year more was expected.   Sumlin’s teams don’t play defense.  Arizona surrendered 45 points, 593 yards in total, with 434 coming via the air.
  6.  PAC 12 Utah looked good handling BYU.  They are one left coast team that plays some D.  Washington might be another.  They worked over Eastern Washington 45-14.  Utah and Washington check in at 12 and 13 in the poll, so there is still time and hope for one or two conference members to emerge as legit national contenders.  It’s the rest of their conference that isn’t helping.
  7.  The race to the bottom of the SEC West is on.  Ole Miss bowed to non Power 5 but good Memphis.  Arkansas struggled at home to beat Portland State 20-13.  They square up Saturday.  The loser has a leg up (or is it down) on the race to the bottom.
  8.  But they weren’t the biggest SEC disappointments.  Nope, and it’s not even close.  The honeymoon is over for Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt after Saturday’s 38-30 loss to Georgia State.  Pruitt burned up all the good will he built in 2018 with upset victories over Auburn and Kentucky.  Some Saban proteges like Jimbo Fisher and Kirby Smart have thrived.  Some like Derek Dooley and Jim McElwain have not.  Pruitt sits in between for now as he just gets year two started.  But in the highly paid SEC coaching business it’s win or else.
  9.  Florida St. and Miami didn’t help the ACC argument.  At least they took on good to real good opponents in week one, so we”ll watch them from here.  Florida St. gave up 38 at home to Boise St.  Miami surrendered 10 sacks to an aggressive Florida defense in a sloppily played game that Florida held on to win.  There is Clemson in the ACC, and there are all others.  If you wanted to bet over the season win total for Clemson, the line was 11 and 1/2 games.  So you had to think they would run the regular season table.  In the next two weeks they host Texas A&M and travel to #21 Syracuse.  If they are 3-0 after that, you can  pay windmake plans to head to the pay window early cause the schedule won’t have on team on it (home or away) that isn’t the underdog by 15 or more.
  10. A&M is getting 17 and 1/2 in that game.  Bama is favored by 55 over New Mexico St.  55.  It’s rare that you see a line that high.  Usually Vegas will just take the game off of the board.  The crew from ESPN head to Austin for College Gameday.  LSU heads there as a 5.5 favorite for now.  The line has moved 3 points in ten days.   It’s early but give us A&M and LSU.  We’ll skip the Bama game like Vegas should have.

Ten Piece Nuggets-Sports

We’re one short week away from NCAA college football.  Our hunger is at it’s peak.  The Ten Nuggets on various sports below will have to tide you over.  And, tide you over they will.  Yum.

  1.  Speaking of the tides, the Alabama crimson one remains the betting favorite for the NCAA Championship. One unnamed analyst that we trust told us that he believes that 9 of the expected 22 starters this year for Bama will eventually be first round NFL draft picks.  Combine that talent with Saban’s high work ethic, coaching staff, knowledge and experience and it’s an uphill climb for others.
  2. Their season win total bet is 11.  So Vegas is not willing to offer you a loss by them and let you collect. Well, at least you would push.  It’s a high bar, but see point one above.  We don’t like high overs, and this one is -160.  But would you really bet the other side?  Will Bama lose twice?  If they do, they won’t be in the playoffs for the first time since, well, ever.  “Ever” is all five years since the current playoff format began, and Bama is five for five in appearances.
  3. Maybe you like Clemson even more?  That bar is even higher.  Their season win total is set at 11 and 1/2.  One loss there and you lose. No pushes occur when lines are on halves.  This over bet is -125.  Steep!  Sheesh.  The smart bet here is under at -105.  But, it’s only smart if Clemson stumbles or someone rises up in the ACC.  Could Texas A and M out of conference and on the road beat them?  Doubtful.  But what a signature win it would be for Jimbo Fisher.
  4. Someone either named Ed Orgeron or Tom Herman will get a signature win of their own in week two.  LSU travels to play Texas in an early season matchup of two AP preseason top ten ranked teams.  LSU is ranked 6th while the resurgent Longhorns are 10th.  The winner gets a strong pelt on the resume wall for down the road playoff consideration.  Both teams have to run through their conference gauntlet as well of course.  Would a one loss to Alabama team named LSU get in?  Would a one loss to Oklahoma team named Texas get in?  It’s WAY too early to wonder?  But, why not wonder?  The NCAA football season is too short to begin with.  Let the party begin.
  5.  The SEC dominates the upper part of the first AP poll.  Alabama is 2, Georgia 3, LSU 6, Florida 8, A&M 12, and Auburn 16.  But the Big 10 actually has seven teams to the six in the SEC.  The Ohio St and Michigan are in the top ten while Penn St., Michigan St., Iowa, Wisconsin, and Nebraska are all in it starting at 15 and below.  Let they party begin we said.
  6. San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went just 1-for-6 for zero yards and an interception on Monday night in his first game since suffering a season-ending knee injury last September.  Garoppolo finished the night, which ended with a 24-15 victory over the Denver Broncos, with a 0.0 passer rating.  You probably can only go up from there.
  7.  Oakland Raiders GM Mike Mayock and Head Coach Jon Gruden beamed on while being interviewed during the NFL Draft last April.  They repeatedly told us that they drafted “football guys who had high character and wanted to play.”  Seems like they didn’t use the same template for their big trade in the offseason.  New Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown has filed a new grievance against the NFL over his not having a full calendar year grace period to find a helmet that works for him.  It’s the third time since camp started that Brown has either left a practice or filed a grievance over what all other NFL payers have already moved forward from.  Mayock said Sunday that Brown had left camp over the helmet issue, and it was “time for him to be all-in or all-out.”  We think that it’s time for him to grow up.
  8. Meanwhile Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, who is nearly five weeks into a holdout over his contract, is training rigorously in California he says and is staying ready to play football while he waits to see if the Chargers will succumb to his new contract demands.  Gordon has told the Chargers through his representation that if he does not receive a new deal, he will sit out.
  9. What do Garrappolo, Brown, and Gordon have in common?  They all play for California based teams.  Garappolo is dreaming of better performances, Brown of better helmets, and Gordon of better money.  California dreaming.
  10. On to the MLB injury front we go.  Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa left after one inning against the Detroit Tigers on Monday because of back discomfort, the team said.  he is day to day.  Let’s hope he doesn’t call a masseuse to work out his issues again.  Meanwhile Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale will miss the remainder of the regular season with a left elbow injury but is expected to avoid Tommy John surgery after a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews confirmed a previous diagnosis of inflammation, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN.  Sale’s season ending injury to the wind out of any sails that the 2018 Champion Red Sox had for 2019.  They are now 16 games behind the eventual division winner NY Yankees and 6 games behind the second of two wild card teams.

Yes, now you can be excused from the table.

 

Ten Piece Nuggets-Sports

It’s a new week and the key to it’s success is getting it off to a good start.  The key to getting Monday off to a good start lies below.  A sports Ten Piece Nuggets is served.

  1. The Houston Astros beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 last Friday night and 23-2 on Saturday.  The “23” is no typo.  It is, though, the most runs ever scored by the 52 year old franchise.  Houston shortstop Carlos Correa, hit a 474 foot home run during the obliteration.  It’s the longest ever hit in the 27 year history of Camden Yards.
  2. So, Sunday, Las Vegas made the Astros a huge favorite to win the third and final game of the series and sweep the lowly 39-77 Orioles.  Cy Young former winner and possibly this year’s favorite, Justin Verlander, was on the bump for the 77-40 Astros.  A $100 bet on the lowly Orioles would pay you $420.  And a walk off, two out, two strike homerun by Rio Ruiz gave Baltimore the win.  It was the largest MLB single game upset v. the betting odds in 15 years.
  3. Despite the loss the Astros have a quite comfortable 10 game lead over the Oakland A’s in the AL West with about 44 regular season games left to play for most teams.   The NY Yankees have a quite comfortable 8.5 game lead over the second place Tampa Bay Rays in the East.  But the Central Division is shaping up as a “down to wire” two team horse race.  Cleveland and Minnesota are tied for first there with identical 71-47 records.  The playoffs only have room for three of Minnesota, Cleveland, Oakland, and Tampa Bay.  The Central winner sits home while the runner up falls to a one game wild card playoff situation as it stands today.   That’s huge for both teams.
  4.  Meanwhile in the NL the Los Angeles Dodgers can start printing home field advantage playoff tickets.  Their 79 wins are nine more than East Division leading Atlanta.  And, it’s a ridiculous 19 games over 59-59 Arizona, second in the West Division.  The Braves are clear of Washington by 6.5 games.  Like the AL, the NL horse race is in the Central where only 2.5 games separate the division leading Chicago Cubs over Saint Louis and Milwaukee.  And from the back of the pack comes the hard charging NY Mets.
  5. Do you know what happened on this August 12th date in MLB in 1994, 25 years ago today?  Nothing.   Players, under the threat of a salary cap, went on strike.  A month later Commissioner Bud Selig announced that the owners voted to cancel the season.  The dark ballparks were symbolic of some of the darkest days of “America’s Game” history.
  6. NCAA football stadiums won’t be dark for much longer.  It’s under two weeks and counting until teams the country over kickoff.  Twenty coaches enter year two with their teams.  It’s usually the year that programs under new coaches make the biggest leap if they are going to turn around the direction for which they were hired to begin with.  Turnover, transfers in and out, philosophy, culture, and two recruiting years take hold.  Or, they don’t.  Last year Ed Orgeron went from a too soon hot seat in year two to a ten win, top ten finish in year two.  Tom Herman guided Texas back into the final top ten standings for the first time in nine long(horn) years.
  7. Who might make that leap this year?  Let’s look west.  How about Herm Edwards at Arizona St?  BBR says meh.   Kevin Sumlin at Arizona perhaps?  No.  Chip Kelly is in year two at UCLA.  We doubt it.  But in Eugene, Oregon we like Mario Cristobal to get his Ducks in a top ten row.
  8. The SEC is brutal, but teams that go 8-4 or a tad better can get to the top ten with a an impressive bowl win to conclude 2019.  Five choices are available.  Joe Moorhead leads Miss St into year two.  We think they regress actually.  Chad Morris at Arkansas is rebuilding in his image from the ground up and has zero chance.  Jeremy Pruitt volunteered to engineer a turnaround at Tennessee.  They’ll be better, but Florida, Georgia, and Alabama and  one or two others will visit the orange and white checkerboard end zone too often still.  Dan Mullen is a rather underrated coach.  Florida could make that leap.  They return an improving Felipe Franks at QB as well.   But, we like Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M the most.  They return an improving Kellon Mond at QB, and Jimbo is a QB Whisperer.  The schedule is brutal.  They tangle with Alabama, LSU, and Auburn in the west and Georgia in the east.  Oh, and out of conference they have the Tigers from Clemson.  Brutal.  It says here that they will go 9-3 or better.
  9. Peyton Manning is doing 100 short feature stories for ESPN+ to celebrate the first 100 years of the NFL.  Peyton’s Place.  If you haven’t seen any, you must catch up.  They are a trip down memory lane, some obscure, all interesting, and quite humorous.  We think Peyton had a great past and we think Peyton has a great future wherever that takes him.  Meanwhile he has a great feature story run.
  10. Another great quarterback is on the move as well.  Tom Brady and his family listed their Brookline, Massachusetts home for a cool $39.5 million last week.  Keeping it under $40 million is quite the value pricing move.   Meanwhile, most of New England area went into full meltdown as to what this meant to his future and the future of the Patriots.  Brady’s restructured deal has team opt outs for 2020 and 2021.  Is this the final season of the longest running hit show in NFL history?  Calm down says Tom.  “You shouldn’t ready into anything.  My house is a little bit of an expensive one, so it doesn’t fly off of the shelf in a couple of weeks,” he advised.  Ya think?  “I love playing for the Patriots.  This is where I want to be.”  Sounds like he might become a commuter.

Hang in there, Tuesday is but a day away.
